Congolese wrestling legend Elephant passes away

Sad news coming in from the Democratic Republic of the Congo where Congolese wrestling legend, and still active wrestler at the time of his passing, Elephant has passed away.

Photos of Elephant lying in repose following his passing have been making their rounds on social media, confirming the sad news.

Elephant had competed in the ring as recently as January 18th of 2023, making it all the way to the final of the Congo National Championship in Congolese style (catch fetiche/voodoo wrestling) before losing to Six Bolite. In turn, Six Bolite was crowned FECOCA Champion of the Congo in Congolese Style with Elephant being recognized as Vice Champion. That match is in the video below and should start when clicking play.

Elephant had a legendary career in the ring. Often wrestling out of the Kasai-Oriental district of the DRC, Elephant had some legendary victories in Kashala Bonzola Stadium in the district’s capital city of Mbuji-Mayi. He was one of the only wrestlers to ever defeat Edingwe, who is considered the greatest wrestler from the Congo and is the creator of the catch fetiche style, causing Kashala Bonzola Stadium to erupt. Elephant revisited that great feud in February of 2022, taking on Edingwe’s son at Kashala Bonzola and winning in controversial fashion.

Elephant was a massive and intimidating figure, often wearing a mask and standing over all of his opponents, including the 6’6” Makidiba. If a Facebook profile that we tracked down is correct, Elephant was born on November 28, 1964, making him 58 years old at the time of his passing.
