Update on WWE African Superstar search

Just a quick update on WWE’s search for the next African WWE Superstar initiative that was launched back in Lagos, Nigeria in December 2022.

Originally, the WWE announced that they would be holding their first tryouts on African soil in Lagos in February 2023. Now that February has come and gone, there was some speculation that the contest winners had been selected and the tryouts had passed but slipped under the radar. But that does not appear to be the case.

A source from the WWE office confirmed to WrestleMap today that the selection process for the contest participants is still ongoing and that the tryout in Lagos has not yet taken place. As of now, no updated date for tryouts or for notifying those selected to attend the tryout has been provided. However, we were assured that an update was coming when more information was available.

For those that are crossing their fingers and still hoping to get a call from the WWE with an invite to the tryouts, it may still be coming!

An additional update was pointed out to us by one African based wrestler. The SuperSport page that’s hosting the contest submissions has now extended their deadline. Those submissions were originally set to be cut off on December 18, 2022 but has since quietly been updated with the contest submissions now being open until April 30, 2023.

While we can’t rule out the possibility that entries in to the contest will receive calls before this date, it seems safe to assume that the Lagos tryouts will be taking place in May 2023 at the very earliest.
