Nigeria’s Gold Wrestling Association set for Valentine’s Day bash in the ring

Valentine Wrestling Championship 2023 will promote community peace for the coming election – High Chief John Uche

The president of the Nigeria Pro Wrestling Federation (NPWF) (who also manages the Golden Wrestling Association (GWA)), High Chief John Uche, has emphasized that the upcoming pro wrestling championship of the national body that will be held in collaboration with the Golden Wrestling Association at Ago Okota in Lagos on the 12th of February 2023 on the Sunday preceding Valentine day, will definitely promote peace and national unity since the Feast day of Saint Valentine is the celebration of love and affection.

While addressing the media at his Office over the weekend, Chief Uche explained that it is good to have the timely championship to preach love and peace in the month of the Nigerian election so that peace can reign supreme. He emphasized that: ‘’While popular culture makes you believe that Valentine's Day is only for love-struck couples, no, that is not true. It's a day of love, and that love can be for anyone. Thus, all kinds of love should be celebrated; whether it is for your parents, your siblings or your children.” We from the wrestling cycle want to use valentine to preach love and peace, so holding a championship two weeks to the Nigeria General elections of 25th February 2023 to elect the President and Vice President as well as members of the Senate and House of Representatives is timely.”

“Holding the valentine championship is our own way of contributing to the national unity, security development and enhancing peace in our local societies. Peace and unity of the nation should be everybody’s concern, including us the wrestling industry. What is obtainable today by living in peace with ourselves has been handworks of some people trying to make sure peace reigns. It will surprise you even after the civil war, we thought we had learnt our lessons which is not so. We all need to live in peace and harmony. No alternative to peace,” Chief Uche continued.

The federation’s president explained further that ‘’Ago-Okota is one of the 11 wards in Oshodi/Isolo LGA where different people with different cultural background, ideologies, religion, ethnicity and orientations are based. We need peace to live together and we want to use the championship to campaign for a violence free election. Sports have been a major unifying strategy and a greater promoter of peace over the years and this championship will not be an exemption to that. Sports are a compelling tool to promote peace, tolerance, and mutual understanding, bringing people together across boundaries, cultures, and religions. Its values such as teamwork, fairness, discipline, and respect are understood all over the world and can be utilized in the advancement of solidarity and social cohesion. There is no way we can celebrate under the disguise of crisis rather than in peace. Lots of youths will be at the championship and we will use the event to advise them against electoral indiscipline. We want peace. The insecurity in the Nigerian nation is giving us nightmares, some of us can no longer sleep well and we believe that once love is available, peace will definitely reign, and things will blossom and flourish as expected.”
