Five thoughts heading into Sunday’s Nigeria Pro Wrestling Federation show

The NPWF is back in action this Sunday, June 13th in Abuja, Nigeria. So far, we know the match card but don’t know the main event. We also know that the National Security, Peace and Unity trophy will be decided in the show’s main event. We do have some guesses though and some other insights into Sunday’s National Security, Peace and Unity Championship. Here are 5 thoughts heading into Sunday’s NPWF show.

1. Stylish “J” is primed for a breakout performance

One of the most intriguing matches heading into Sunday in Abuja is the matchup between the undefeated rookie sensation Alexandra The Queen and the tough and experienced Stylish “J.” Alexandra was able to sneak out a surprise victory in her very first match over Iron Lady Becky back in late March. But by all accounts, J is not impressed. In fact, the stylish one has announced that she doesn’t know her opponent and doesn’t care to either. J truly believes that she’s the best female wrestler in Nigeria and with that kind of confidence heading into the match, it’s hard to believe that she’ll let her guard down and give Alexandra a chance to prove otherwise. That isn’t to say that we don’t think Alexandra stands a chance in this match. Alexandra is a very talented wrestler and an athletic performer. She will definitely give Stylish J fits. But in the end, it may be hard for Alexandra to outmatch J’s class and experience.

2. While he has the size advantage against his opponent, Mighty Man’s path to victory against The Great Mosendo may not be as easy as he would hope

Mighty Man comes into Sunday’s event riding high in the NPWF, following his win against Powerful Young Mike in the heavyweight main event at the Mock Wrestling Championship in March. That gives Mighty Man one of the highest profiles in the NPWF right now. In most cases, the size and strength advantage that Mighty Man holds over most of his potential opponents is enough to make him the favorite heading into the match. Heading into Sunday, though, that advantage may not be as clear cut. Mighty Man’s opponent on Sunday is The Great Mosendo, a wrestler who has experience wrestling not only in Nigeria but also in South Africa, which many consider to be the country with the highest profile and most successful pro wrestling scene in all of Africa. Mosendo has seen success in both countries and will definitely be a tougher opponent for Mighty Man than a less experienced wrestler of Mosendo’s size. It will be interesting to see if Mighty Man can keep his win streak going.

3. One team has an opportunity to lay claim to the title of the best tag team in Nigeria

Tag team wrestling is back in Nigeria! WrestleMap’s Chief Correspondent in Africa, Olusesan Olukoya, had recently bemoaned the state of tag team wrestling in Nigeria. In years past, Nigeria had a strong tag team scene with many teams vying for the top spot as the best tag team in the country. Luckily for fans of tag team wrestling, it looks like that tag team scene is making a comeback. Now, one of the two teams competing on Sunday has a chance to claim that top spot early on in this tag team revival. Both teams, The Grippers (consisting of Mr. Sharpman and Powerful Young Mike) and The Dakkada Thunders (Power Vic and Zion Lion), have experience teaming together. It will be interesting to see which team can knock the cobwebs of tag team competition off first and go on to become Nigeria’s new top tag team.

4. Flying Danko could have a special performance

Flying Danko is one of Nigeria’s most memorable wrestlers. He sticks out based on both his masked appearance and his high flying in ring style. But Danko seems to be gearing up for something special this Sunday. Having just celebrated his son’s first birthday on Thursday, Danko no doubt has it in his mind that he would love to provide him with the big gift of a victory in Abuja on Sunday. It’s not only his son’s birthday that’s on his mind though. Danko has repeatedly stated to expect something special from him on Sunday, promising to pull out all of his gimmicks and high flying maneuvers, even some his fans have yet to see. His opponent Rasman Iron is certainly no push over and will put up a good fight, and has just as much of a chance to leave Abuja with a victory as Danko. But he should be prepared to be hit with anything and everything, both inside and outside of Flying Danko’s arsenal, if he stands a chance of leaving the Nigerian capital as the victor.

5. So who are the top contenders to compete for the trophy?

The big question heading into the National Security, Peace and Unity Championship is who will have a shot to contend for the trophy? The NPWF’s matchmakers have yet to show their hand and reveal to the fans who will fight in the night’s main event. But we have a few guesses. One possibility is that we could see Strong Bone taking on Captain Dungan in the main event for the trophy. Strong Bone has a history of competing in some big spots for the NPWF, including taking on “Bambikiller” Chris Raaber at the 2012 BRF Wrestlemania. Another possibility is Mighty Man and The Great Mosendo competing for the trophy. With Mighty Man coming off a main event win at the last NPWF show, it would make perfect sense. A third option is the hometown hero, the king of Arewa wrestling and longtime holder of the African Topclass Wrestling Stars (ATWS) Middleweight championship title, Aliking The Action Disaster having a shot at the trophy against impressive newcomer Mighty Progress. Aliking certainly has the pedigree and championship history to receive a shot at the trophy and Mighty Progress is making waves in his short time as a pro wrestler. But then again, there’s also a strong possibility we could see Flying Danko and Rasman Iron in that main event gunning for the chance to become a national peace ambassador and to be the new holder of the National Security, Peace and Unity trophy.

Stay tuned to WrestleMap for more updates, including the possibility of being able to watch the show online, as we get closer to Sunday.
