5 takeaways and all the video we could find from the Nigeria Professional Wrestling Federation’s 40th Anniversary
The Nigeria Professional Wrestling Federation celebrated a big anniversary seldom seen in the often volatile world of pro wrestling. The federation celebrated their 40th anniversary with a four match card in Lagos on Sunday, November 21st. The big event featured multiple championship title belt matches and some interesting results that could use some more analyzing. We’ll take a look at our five big takeaways from the event below.
We’ve also compiled all of the video that we’ve been able to track down of the matches so far. Check that out right below this sentence!
Mighty Progress gaining experience and improving
The young rookie is getting some big opportunities in big matches. Progress first had an opportunity to capture the National Security, Peace and Unity Trophy back in June of this year. He lost a hard fought bout to Aliking The Action Disaster in that match but learned enough from that bout about what it takes not to lose. Progress now had the opportunity to open the NPWF’s 40th Anniversary event in a match against Flying Danko, a wrestler that defeated Progress back when he made his debut in Lagos back in March at the Mock Wrestling Championship. Instead of repeating the same result from back in March, Progress showed that he has learned and gained experiencing, going the distance with the more experienced Flying Danko in a time limit draw.
Mighty Man is still the king of Nigerian pro wrestling
The Nigerian Heavyweight Champion had a chance to add to his title belt collection at the anniversary event and he did just that. Mighty Man beat Super Rosco in a ladder match for the International Heavyweight Championship Title Belt to become the inaugural holder of the belt and a double champion. He did so in what may have been Nigeria’s first ever ladder match and took at least one big spill off the ladder (clip available in our video compilation above). Mighty Man has also recently commented that he would love to add to his belt collection and would like to get a shot at the African Heavyweight Championship. We’re assuming that means the Pro Wrestling African version of the African Heavyweight Championship currently held by Cameroon’s Michel Noudem. As the highest ranking champion in Nigeria, Mighty Man probably does deserve consideration for a look at that title at some point. But for now, there’s no doubting Mighty Man’s spot at the top of Nigerian pro wrestling.
More events and more video content may be coming soon
As part of the 40th Anniversary aspect of the event, the NPWF held a couple of different ceremonies and presentations during the event. Among them was a presentation by Nigerian pro wrestler (who is currently living in Scotland) Banilux Bulldog, who had travelled in to Lagos from Scotland just to attend the 40th Anniversary event, to the federation of a video camera. This should help make recording live events much easier and will save the federation costs on hiring an outside service to come in and video record their events. This could go on to be a game changer in terms of getting their product out to more potential fans. Speaking of potential fans, there is word coming from some in the federation that they would like to hold more frequent events with the belief being that more frequent events will create more interest in fans attending them. The goal of this initiative would be to help return the pro wrestling industry to the the glory days it saw in Nigeria back in the 1980’s and 1990’s. So far this year, the NPWF has managed to hold three events since March so they are on a good pace for holding events in 2021, especially with the uncertain landscape Covid-19 has created in the pro wrestling scene in many communities around the world.
Alexandra The Queen proves the doubters wrong again
Feisty women’s division rookie Alexandra The Queen is still undefeated. She shocked the crowd on hand by hanging on and fighting larger opponent Stylish J to a time limit draw. This is the second time that these two have met in the ring, the last time being at the National Security, Peace and Unity event in Nigeria’s first ever women’s triple threat match. That bout also ended in a draw. The NPWF matchmakers decided to put the new International Women’s Championship Belt up for grabs in the singles match between Alexandra and J and many at the venue believed Stylish J’s experience and size advantage would put an end to the feisty and talented rookie’s undefeated streak and that Stylish J would leave with the belt. Alexandra proved that size and experience aren’t everything and excelled with her heart, determination and high flying talent. For now, the women’s championship remains vacant.
USA Bing makes a big splash
Congolese wrestler USA Bing made an appearance on the event as the only foreign wrestler to compete on the four match card. The Congolese wrestler was supported by a good sized contingent of Congolese fans that attended the event and cheered loud for their countryman. USA Bing took on Major Ariba in a bout for the Chief Martin Agbaso International Championship Belt and wrestled, by all accounts, and from what our exclusive video shows, an exquisite and fundamentally solid match. Now that USA Bing is the holder of this title belt, hopefully we will see more of him at future NPWF events!
No official word yet on what’s next on the calendar from the NPWF as a follow up to their 40th Anniversary event. We will keep you updated here on WrestleMap of any updates that we learn of!
