Pro wrestling returning to Congo-Brazzaville as champion of Brazzaville will be decided in weekend long event

Good news for the wrestlers and wrestling fans in Republic of the Congo. Pro wrestling, or “catch” as they call it in the Congo, is set to resume in the country starting on Wednesday, September 29th with events running through the weekend and into early October, culminating on Saturday, October 2nd. The event is know as the Departmental Championship and its outcome will have huge ramifications on the Congolese wrestling scene.

The CONACA (Congo Association of Catch) Brazzaville Champion, RTGA Du Pouvoir Lion, has confirmed with WrestleMap that he will be in action at the Departmental Championship. We reached out to RTGA to get a better understanding of what will be going down at the Departmental Championship and what will be decided at the four day long event. The reigning champion of Brazzaville informed us that the new champion of Brazzaville will be determined at the event. In other words, if RTGA does not emerge as the victor in the championship final, he will no longer be champion of Brazzaville and will lose his title belt. RTGA expressed excitement about returning to the ring, as the champion has been forced to take a long layoff from the ring due to the Covid-19 pandemic. But the champ is also weary and focused heading into the event.

Another name that has been confirmed for the Departmental Championship is Bedezo D’Afrique. Bedezo is a former foe of RTGA’s and the two have met in a triple threat match in the past that apparently ended in no decision. The news of Bedezo’s involvement in the event originally came to WrestleMap’s attention via some information shared by Alain Africacatch, one of the more knowledgeable sources on pro wrestling in both of the Congos. Alain name dropped Bedezo, along with RTGA, as two impressive talents to watch during the Departmental Championship. Bedezo has confirmed his involvement in the championship with the sharing of a custom graphic that advertises the event, which can be seen below. Could Bedezo be a threat to RTGA’s title and be a legitimate contender to become the next champion of Brazzaville?

A full flyer has been released for the event as well, confirming more participants that will be gunning for an opportunity to take RTGA’s place as champion of Brazzaville. Some of those names include Kabo Waces, Yaya Palmas (who was featured in the film Sunday In Brazzaville which is available on Amazon Prime Video in the USA), Ours Noir and more. Kabo Waces (“the Congolese siren” pictured on the flyer in the red, yellow and green hat) and Yaya Palmas are both popular names in the catch fetiche scene in the Republic of the Congo with both wrestlers having won championships in the past. Can catch fetiche and mysticism overcome the technical in ring prowess of RTGA, the current champion of Brazzaville?

Whoever emerges from the four day Departmental Championship event as the winner will be crowned the new champion of Brazzaville. Stay tuned for more updates, and hopefully match footage, of this huge championship event set for next weekend in Brazzaville!
