Regional wrestling event to showcase DRC’s best set for Kinshasa this Saturday
The Ligue de Kinshasa de Catch (Kinshasa Catch League), or LICAKIN, is holding a wrestling show on Saturday in the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo featuring some of the country’s best grapplers. The wrestlers that are set to participate have been hand selected and invited to perform by the regional wrestling club that encompasses all of the neighborhoods and districts of the sprawling capital city and the wrestling clubs that lie within it. So far, not all of the wrestlers that will be competing in the event are clear. However, one of the matches we do know for certain. The captain of Catch Club Tshunga Na Tshunga, Ewingi, will be going one on one with the current LICAKIN champion of the Mont Amba District, Migolba!
It appears as if this showdown has been brewing for a while between the two. The interview video below captures a program that both wrestlers recently guested on. While French is not the native language of the author of this piece, it is still apparent that the two wrestlers did have some tense moments between themselves. This could make for an even more entertaining watch for fans that can speak French, but with the footage playing in the background and being able to observe the demeanor of the wrestlers, it is a fun watch nonetheless.
While those of us here at WrestleMap are unfamiliar with Migolba’s style in the ring since we have not had the opportunity to find video of him in action, we are familiar with Ewingi’s wrestling style. Ewingi, who can sometimes be referred to as Super Ewingi, is a very proficient classic style wrestler. Among the offensive maneuvers he’s capable of, he is the only Congolese wrestler we have ever seen execute a superplex, or top rope suplex. This move may be one that some American wrestling fans take for granted since it has become relatively common to see in a televised match. However, the maneuver takes an immense amount of strength and balance that can be difficult to execute on a high quality American wrestling ring with steel cable ropes. Now imagine executing that same maneuver while standing atop ring ropes that are often made of rope and aren’t quite as tight and stable as what you would see in an American wrestling ring. Long story short, this guy is good and the fans love him, getting huge crowd reactions every time he performs. Check out one of Ewingi’s matches below!
While it is unclear at this time whether or not Migolba’s title will be on the line in the bout on Saturday, we will be sure to keep you updated on the outcome of the match and abreast of as many details as we can of the happenings at the LICAKIN gala in Kinshasa!
May 26 Update: Saturday’s planned match didn’t end up going as planned due to some money and sponsorship issues. Ewingi still ended up being in action but defeated another member of Catch Club Tshunga Na Tshunga. The hope is that Ewingi and Migolba can still square off and settle their differences soon.
