Botswana Wrestling Federation releases 2022 schedule featuring several pro wrestling events

The Botswana Wrestling Federation, the national body headed up by Dr. Moagi Sharp that oversees every level of wrestling in Botswana (pro, amateur, and otherwise), has released their proposed schedule for 2022 and early 2023. The calendar has a fair number of pro wrestling events listed which is a good sign for the Southern African country’s young pro wrestling industry.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, pro wrestling in Botswana has been put on hold for the most part aside from some online practice. Prior to the pandemic, pro wrestling in Botswana was still in its infancy and the Botswana Wrestling Federation’s main focus was on Olympic style wrestling.

With the release of their 2022 calendar, the BWF, and the pro wrestling arm of the BWF, Wrestling Entertainment Championship, looks to be focusing on expanding the country’s pro wrestling industry. The 2022 calendar features pro wrestling events nearly every month and perhaps the most exciting aspect of the increased presence of pro wrestling on the calendar is the fact that pro wrestling shows are planned for many different cities in Botswana.

WrestleMap was able to connect with Dr. Moagi Sharp, the head of the Botswana Wrestling Federation, for a quick chat about the group’s 2022 calendar and the increased presence of pro wrestling on the calendar. Dr. Sharp shared that supporters of the Botswana Wrestling Federation have shown the most interest in professional wrestling amongst all the types of wrestling that the federation oversees. It is for that reason that the 2022-2023 calendar has seen such an uptick in scheduled pro wrestling events.

Dr. Sharp shared that there is an eagerness throughout the country to see live pro wrestling which helps to explain all of the different cities that the federation plans to hold pro wrestling events in during the 2022 calendar year. Dr. Sharp shared that after ten years of focusing on the grassroots growth of Olympic style wrestling, an effort now is being made to focus more on the development and growth of the professional wrestling scene in Botswana with more resources and time being reserved for the pro style.

Dr. Sharp also shared that the goal of the BWF and WEC is for Botswana to be recognized as a great pro wrestling country in Africa. He also mentioned that the long term goal is to hold big, internationally recognized events featuring international talent. However, for now, things will start small with continued training and events around Botswana in 2022.

Here’s to hoping that the pro wrestling scene in Botswana will have the opportunity to establish itself and be more active in the coming year. Fingers crossed that the Covid-19 pandemic will not continue to get in the way of this admirable, grassroots effort.
