Nepal Ring Wrestling Association New Year’s Day Event Draws Huge, Lively Crowd

The Nepal Ring Wrestling Association held their Nepali New Year’s Day event, Summer Slam, earlier this afternoon at the rural mountain location of Suryachaur in Shivapuri Gaupalika, Nuwakot. April 14th marks the first day of the year on the Vikrami calendar that is used as the official calendar in Nepal.

By all accounts, Summer Slam was a massive success. A huge and lively crowd was on hand to cheer on their favorites and they were vocal throughout the event. While an official attendance figure hasn’t been provided, spectators packed the area around the ring until there was no more room left and spread to atop nearby buildings while some even watched from the mountainside.

As for the wrestling itself, the crowd was not disappointed. In the past, the NRWA had used it’s main event to crown a champion of the event. The participants in the main event are usually selected based on recent performance and skill level. To kick off the new year, however, the NRWA used a different approach. At Summer Slam, five matches were contested in five different divisions and match styles. Each winner was declared the champion of that division for the event but no championship title belts were awarded other than in the heavyweight division match, but more on that later.

In lightweight action, X-Hero was able to overcome CJ World. The afternoon’s middleweight matchup was perhaps a bit of an upset, as Shine defeated David Maharjan. David was the runner up for the 2021 Nepal National Championship at the NRWA’s last event earlier in April. To see him get a loss to start the new year, and now facing a two match losing streak after coming so close to the National Championship, makes one wonder if the loss to Nuwakote Tiger in the championship match is having an effect on his confidence and in turn his performance in the ring.

In the women’s division, the fans were treated to a triple threat match that had them on the edge of their seats. In the end, Denika was able to score the pin fall victory after powerbombing Deelasha off of the top turnbuckle just as Deelasha was connecting on a t-bone superplex in a three way maneuver that wowed the crowd.

The night’s heavyweight division match featured the newly crowned Nepal National Champion Nuwakote Tiger going one on one with Chattan. In a match that spilled through the audience and onto the stage where the dignitaries and top staff members of the NRWA were seated, Nuwakote Tiger hit a rock hard body slam directly onto the hard stage just inches away from the dignitaries and staff. The two competitors were able to make their way back to the ring where Nuwakote Tiger was able to put away another opponent with his devastating top rope elbow drop. Following the match, Nuwakote Tiger was presented with the National Championship title belt that he had won earlier this month although the belt itself was not on the line in the match.

The afternoon’s main event was a rough, rowdy and bloody hardcore match between The Yuv and Thagu. For fans of hardcore wrestling, this one had at all. Chairs, ladders, thumbtacks, brawling through the crowd, blood, you name it. At one point, the wrestlers ended up in the crowd as the fans scrambled from their seats. While brawling through the mountainous dusty soil, there’s no doubt that the dirt getting into the competitors open wounds created even more pain for the wrestlers involved in the match. After a bloody battle, Thagu emerged victorious after hitting a dangerous looking moonsault to The Yuv who was stretched out over a ladder. The NRWA has confirmed to WrestleMap that all of the night’s champions were rewarded with a handsome cash prize.

The entire event is available to view for free on the NRWA’s Facebook page and we recommend checking it out. As of press time, the video has already received over 55,000 views. There is a great energy to the event, the wrestling is good and exciting and the crowd is massive and energized throughout. After this immensely successful event, we cannot wait to see what the future holds for the NRWA.
