Pro wrestling heading to Gibraltar for the first time

Professional wrestling is set to make its debut in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar this month. LDN Wrestling will be bringing their show to the tiny territory that is geographically located to the south of Spain on November 13th.

The event, which has been titled Rumble at the Big Rock, is set to take place onboard a five star yacht on the site of the Sunborn Hotel in Gibraltar.
WrestleMap had an opportunity to speak with some sources from within LDN Wrestling about this endeavor to bring pro wrestling to the territory for the first time.

Among the most pressing questions we had when speaking with our source at LDN was why Gibraltar? Was there a reason that the tiny territory was being selected for a wrestling show by a company based in London, UK? The reason for Gibraltar, our source explained, is because of national pride in the UK and it’s holdings.

“We like to promote the LDN product all over the world. We run shows in the United States and all across Europe including Romania, Austria, Hungary and many other countries.

The reason that I’m very eager to bring wrestling to Gibraltar is the British connection. Born and raised in London I’m very proud to be British. And Gibraltar is a British overseas territory which happens to be located next to Spain.

All over the world we have promoted a British product and will be continuing that when we come to Gibraltar on the 13th of November,” explained one member of the LDN staff.

Outside of LDN working to promote the show, they have shared that there has also been some political backing and assistance from members of the British Parliament including Paul Bristow and Andrew Rosindell. LDN shared that both politicians have been very helpful and supportive in helping to make this initiative come true.

Bringing pro wrestling to Gibraltar is something that has been in the planning stages for quite some time now and it most likely would have happened by now if it weren’t for the Covid-19 pandemic creating a delay. LDN has pushed the event back multiple times, most recently rescheduling a planned September 5th date. But the company has recently confirmed that the November 13th date will indeed go ahead as planned. Logistically, making the event happen won’t be very easy. LDN is set to transport their ring by van from London to Gibraltar which adds up to just about 24 hours of drive time. From there, the ring will need to be loaded on to the yacht.

As per a conversation that WrestleMap had with LDN Wrestling back in September, tickets had been moving well. At that point, nearly 70% of tickets had sold. A glance at the ticketing site shows that at this point, front row tickets have sold out but some general admission tickets do remain. The ticketing site also includes important information for attendees regarding Covid-19 related vaccination and testing status. LDN indicated to WrestleMap that they would love to make trips to Gibraltar a yearly thing but admitted that it all depends on the turnout and reception for this inaugural event. More on recurring wrestling events in Gibraltar later.

As for the card for this first pro wrestling event in Gibraltar, LDN British Champion Alan Lee Travis is confirmed to be defending his title at the event. LDN Capital Champion Joey Scott, who is currently in his fifth reign as champion, will also be defending his title on the card. In total, four singles matches are planned for the event along with a main event battle royal match.

Back to the topic of recurring wrestling events in Gibraltar in the future. Prior to the pandemic, a new wrestling promotion known as Gibraltar Pro Wrestling was set to launch that would have been the territory’s first pro wrestling promotion. They had announced talent that would be competing for them with names including NXT UK’s A-Kid among others. Due to the pandemic, it appears as if these plans may have been at least temporarily called off. The last social media post shared by the group came back in April of 2021. GPW did not respond to several inquiries prior to the completion of this story so their status at the time being remains unknown.
