New catch fetiche championship title bout uploaded to YouTube

Congo Canal 26, which is a great resource for Congolese pro wrestling, especially coming from the southeast portion of the country, uploaded a new catch fetiche (or “voodoo wrestling”) match to YouTube.

The match is for the Likasi championship belt. Likasi is a city in the south of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, located in the country’s Haut-Katanga province. In the DRC, championship title belts are usually decided based on geographical districts rather than by individual wrestling promotions or clubs. Neighborhoods or districts within bigger cities may have their own champion, but usually the top champion in an area will hold a title belt that represents the entire city.

This bout for the Likasi championship belt takes place between Volcan Moto Moto Makumba (which roughly translates to double motorcycle volcano Makumba) and Matembele Soda Ya Poto. The match starts out with some very solid, traditional Congolese-style pro wrestling. Some strikes, some European uppercuts, a nice leg drop. From there, the match shifts to the catch fetiche style. The wrestlers use spells, a live bird, fire, fetishes and even have members of the crowd in the ring in a fetiche-induced trance at one point. An important fact to keep in mind while watching the match is that in Congolese pro wrestling, matches can often be won by knockout depending on the stipulations of the particular match, which is why the referee will begin a ten count many times when the competitors have hit the canvas.

Unfortunately, due to the fact that none of the writers on our staff are French or native Congolese language speakers, we can not confirm 100% which wrestler is which in the bout or which wrestler became champion. However, due to a few posts on social media platforms, we have good reason to believe that Volcan Moto Moto Makumba was the winner of this bout and is currently reigning as the pro wrestling champion of Likasi.

Overall, this is a very entertaining match and one that you should check out if you’re interested in Congolese pro wrestling or the catch fetiche style.
